I have been unable to get my HRT patches due to supply problems. This has been going on for months. I understand that patches may have a better safety profile so I managed to get gel though a private prescription but it is expensive and my GP surgery would not prescribe it for me. Would a short stint on oral HRT be a reasonable short term solution until the patches are available again? Thank you!

There have been some supply issues with specific brands of patch - specifically estradot 75mcg - but most women are able to switch to a generic non branded alternative - the company is working to reduce any supply issues so we hope this is a short term problem and yes many women are recommended to switch to gel or spray as an alternative. Transdermal oestrogen (patch/gel or spray) have a lower risk profile than oral oestrogen in terms of clotting risk (blood clots to the leg/lumg or stroke). Whist many women who are low risk are able to safely have oral oestrogen this requires a full risk assessment with your medical pratitioner and discussion about risk/benefit and suitablity to enable an informed decision and safe prescribing.
