I have been experiencing pain on the top, bony part of my feet. It's been there for a year now and not getting any better. I get pain when I'm out and about but I can also expereince pain in bed at night. Footwear does not seem to make a difference. I am in my 70's and quite active. I have recently had steroid injections in my ankle for synovitis, which have been really helpful. Is there a name for my problem and is there anything I can do about it? Should I see a physiotherapist, podiatrist or my GP?

Hi It’s great that you’ve looked at footwear to help see if that influences the pain on the top of the foot. I’d try and ensure that there still some too much pressure or force from laces/buckles/straps around the middle of the foot which may be compressing and irritating the small bones in the foot too. Also wearing supportive house shoes like house trainers can be useful. I’d suggest seeing a podiatrist as a first port of call to check the structures in your foot and see if your shoes may need some extra support to help offload the irritable structure too. Calf stretches are also useful if you’re an active lady as these may be a little tight which can affect the pressure through the foot and ankle. So after seeing a podiatrist, seeing a physiotherapist to address any muscle tightness or imbalance would help.
I hope that helps.
Thank you, Leila
